Good news - Portobello, the hair cutting capital of Scotland, is to gain two more hairdressers!
99 High St is to be a barber; 212 (was the computer place) will be a hair & beauty place.

99 High Street. Birthplace of the "99" Cone
Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)
And, in a move to ensure that title can never be challenged, no 188 High St (opposite the RBS) is going to be ANOTHER hairdresser.wangi wrote:Good news - Portobello, the hair cutting capital of Scotland, is to gain two more hairdressers!

I know I don't have much myself, but since when did Portobello have so much hair?!

Porty could become the merkin producing capital of Scotland with all the spare hair lying around!!!!

I hoped they were just taking a post Christmas break.

On the plus side, I don't think we have a Sue Ryder yet, this could be an opportunity for them.
Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)
Think we used to have one, where Fine Wines is now. Sue got on her horse and rode out of town.

Tallying it all up - since Xmas we've lost/ are losing: Annie and Belle, Isa Mae, Earthy, Blockbuster and no 44/ Second Ave - have I missed any? I'd call that a crisis and we're on a v slippery slope whatever way you look at it
Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)
A quick check of their website shows that the Portobello Earthy "is now closed for a winter break. We plan to re-open the store in late Spring 2013 refreshed and rejuvenated".

We are also losing the florist in Brighton Place. Its sad to see so many shops failing because of lack of customers.... because that is the reason, customers have no spare cash left once shopping and bills have been paid. The small independant shops are having a very bad time of it at the moment.
Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)
That's going to be La Favorita, pending planning. Personally, I'm delightedminnie1957 wrote:We are also losing the florist in Brighton Place. I see they are having a make over at Leith Walk too.
Am a die hard Jolly half pizza/half pasta girl, would feel a traitor if I went to La Favorita. Have been going to Jolly for 30 yrs - and the decor hasnt changed - its an kitsch extravaganza.

Let's hope they get their permissions. It'll be difficult enough to actually get hot food consent there (and I should know) without factoring in the objectors. Let's see, will they sight over-provision, or detrimental to the character of the area, or traffic issues, or loss of green space…Franck wrote: That's going to be La Favorita, pending planning. They could site that, 'We may have been a contributory factor in the demise of Annie and Belle so hopefully we will be able to screw this one up too. We love empty units'.Chas wrote:...... P.S. I'm more Favorita than Jolly and its been quite a few months since I was last in the Jolly - I was gobsmaked they had not change the decor!

The Jolly is a time warp for me back to when I was a child and my granny used to take us for minestrone, a half and half and the ice cream in a little silver dish with strawberry sauce. I take my 7 yr old now and he gets the free lollies and flat juice lol.
Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)
Not been in the jolly for a long time, an ex employee told me a story that put me off for ever.Puerto bella wrote:The Jolly is a time warp for me back to when I was a child and my granny used to take us for minestrone, a half and half and the ice cream in a little silver dish with strawberry sauce. Love La Favorita, so will be delighted if they get planning consent to open in Portobello.
Maybe all the deliverys we're ordered from the Leith Walk branch has persuaded them there's a lot of potential custom in Portobello.
A shame to lose another shop, but at least there are other florists in Portobello. The florist next to Earthy is also looking for premises on the High Street, so could be she will be moving into one of the other empty premises we've got.

Think I can beat you on the 30 years!
It's now the closest pizza place to my flat. Vito works very hard and its a great value when two or three families get together. I'd say the standard is random.
Favorita Group- Their offer improves as you walk down leith walk. The Italian Coffee place on the corner (Baxters Place?) used to be Rankins then "The Bronx"- the quality of food here is pretty poor. Victorias- why this place is so popular is beyond me. The food looks good and is presented well but it's tatsteless. Must be like discovering Sally Nugent is a poor kisser. Favorita- is a class apart, never had a disappointing meal there. Pizza is pricey but quality.

So if it's all the same group, let's not get too excited. We could get a fabulous takeaway Favorita or we could get the non-league version.

Despite it being very sad there are some equally sad people in our community spreading nasty rumours about these lovely ladies. Do not believe them.thecrawfords wrote:Looks like thats Annie and Belle cafe closed. I am sad to hear there are rumours - very strange indeed! I dont know of any rumours to be honest. I hope by cutting and pasting my comment you are not implying I am spreading a rumour?? As I have said above its a huge loss for Portobello and I thought the owners and staff were all just terrific.

I must move in the right circles.I've never heard anything bad about them.Puerto bella wrote:Despite it being very sad there are some equally sad people in our community spreading nasty rumours about these lovely ladies. I'm unaware of any rumours too. Posting that there are nasty rumours out there is probably not the best way to ensure they don't spread any further...

FFS - this place is twisted.
crawfords - was just linking the conversation not implying yourself at all.
Am closely linked to A&B and am defending them as their friend- this is essential because there are members of our PCC who find it funny/ amusing that they have closed and have sought fit to start a nasty rumour....
