Portobello press cuttings

Post by Bob Jefferson » 14 Mar 2009, 16:33

Margeorie Mekie has a folder of press cuttings relating to Portobello. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with them but where online copies of the articles are available I'm going to list the links here, for the time being at least.

The first story appeared in the Evening News on 30 October 2002. It concerns Portobello boy Frank McWilliams who became Lord Mayor of London:

It seems that EN back-issues are only available online as far back as Jan 02 at present, so in the interim I will list the title and issue date.

"Generations of memories destroyed in one night" concerns the fire that engulfed St Philips. It appeared in the 4 December 1998 issue of the EN. Centre-spread feature with dramatic colour photo of the fire.

"The power and the glory of Portobello" appeared in an 'Eye on the Past' feature on 29 September 2001. The article concerned Portobello Power Station and included 3 b&w photos.

The next article is from the Scotsman magazine, dated 11 February 2006. I have linked to this before in the infamous Re-aPier thread but the link there is broken due to changes at the Scotsman website. This is a real problem for us because it means that none of our old links work. They are aware of the issue but don't seem in any hurry to resolve it.

Pier pressure

Just read the article about the fantastic plan to build a new pier in Porty.

I underdstand the lottery funding never came. Is this idea being pursued anywhere?

Is that the same Krause family that had a mention in the Scotsman the other day?

That was my grandad's name and yes he had lost fingers on his hand in an accident but as far as I know he wasn't sent to the front.
