Little things on the beach

I keep finding small things disk shaped things in the sand. I imagine many of you will know what I am on about but they are hard to desribe. They are circular, about 4millimetres in diameter and 1-2 millimetre thick. They are a hard material and most of them are opaque though I think some have a stronger colouring. The edges have been smoothed off by the sea.

What are they?

Thanks, ecm. But my general knowledge of plastic manufacture is poor. Why are they produced and where do all ours come from?
