I wasn't wondering about him one little bit until you posted and now I'm frantic.Marya wrote:Wondering where Bob has gone? Try the Portobello Reporter Autumn 2008 !
The autumn edition isn't available online yet and the hard copy doesn't always make it up the hill.
Please tell me where he is before I have an attack of the vapors.

That's a bit bizarre, no? Perhaps it's a typo and they meant cute flowers.Marya wrote:There's some interesting stuff in there ecm. For example, I was surprised to find out that Bob gets excited by cut flowers
Which would still be a bit mad.
Cute lowers maybe?
Yes, cute lowers sounds much more plausible.

I'm back. I've been away. More later.
And you're right, there should have been something in there about Cumberland sausage. And CUFC. And, specifically, I can't believe that there was no mention of Stan Bowles. Or Gale Porter for that matter. Or Fay Fife.
To explain about the flower thing: the exciting bit is that you get to spend huge sums of (someone else's) money on a perishable commodity, something that will be dead in a matter of days, in the hope of turning a profit on a ridiculously low margin. I remember one particular afternoon a few weeks prior to Xmas drinking large volumes of whisky with the then manager, trying to work out what to order. We extrapolated wildly from one particular customer's advance order and ended up buying about five times more than we could possibly hope to sell. A learning experience for me and another nail in the coffin for him. Have you seen the flower auction at Aalsmeer? It is (or at least was) the largest covered building in the world. The buyers there can make and lose fortunes and are usually burned out within a few years.

I'm currently at Joppa Rocks, the new seafood restaurant in Portobello Catz. Talk Porty remains a fascinating archive and one that many 'incomers' are probably blissfully unaware of. I'm sure that many of the links are broken but the forum otherwise appears to be in perfect working order. So much better than Facebook for discussion or anything else that came after. Time for another comeback?
