Neighbourhood Partnerships/£eith decides
Just wondering if Portobello does something like this?I don't think it does, but I'd happy to be put right.
What a terrific way of doing things....today Leithers will vote on what local causes should benefit from neighbourhood partenrship funding, with over £22K up for grabs.

Re: Neighbourhood Partnerships/£eith decides
Every area of City of Edinburgh is covered by a Neighbourhood Partnership. The city is divided into Wards and groups of wards form partnership areas, the exception being Ward 12 City Centre which has its own Neighbourhood Partnership. Leith Neighbourhood Partnership covers Wards 12 & 13.Franck wrote:Just wondering if Portobello does something like this?I don't think it does, but I'd happy to be put right.

£eith decides is unique though across the Neighbourhood Partnerships. Rather that groups applying to a grants fund and a committee deciding who gets the cash, everyone who lives, works or studies in Leith who is over 8 years of age scores local projects funding applications. Participatory budgeting possibly at its best.
This year around 800 votes were cast. Okay, its a small percentage of those who live, work or study in Leith but its way more than the number of people who would be deciding if it was a committee.

This is what I was wondering, thanks for clarifying.I reckon it's the best way of distributing funds.BeachBum wrote:Every area of City of Edinburgh is covered by a Neighbourhood Partnership. Next question...what kind of figure does Portbello partnership have to distribute, and is there a list of recipients?...Leith had £22K this year to give out.

It might be worth you contacting the Partnership Development Officer for the Portobello & Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnership for a chat or even email them.Franck wrote:This is what I was wondering, thanks for clarifying.I reckon it's the best way of distributing funds.

Yeah, sure no worries.I'm not active in the community, but I thought the way Leith handled this was outstanding.mcdryburn wrote:Can you l'et us know what you find out please?

All in all a good response.I've asked who makes up the board, will advise if that info is available to the public.Thank you for your e-mail to Jim Hunter dated 6 March 2013, asking about how the Portobello and Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnership distributes its Community Grants Funding.
In terms of current practice, all the Portobello & Craigmillar Community Grants Fund (CGF) is decided by the members of the Neighbourhood Partnership Board. The membership includes three councillors, three community representatives and one member each from the Voluntary Sector, Health Service and Police.
The Leith Partnership decided to try a new approach and run the 'Leith Decides' event as an exercise in participatory budgeting for its CGF. A proportion of its overall budget was decided in this way. (I understand that the remainder of their fund is decided in the same way as Portobello & Craigmillar). The cost of running the participatory budget events for room hire etc was approximately £1,300 (excluding staff time for planning/delivery). The new approach did appear to influence the %age of residents who reported that they felt they had a say in decision making, however this dipped a little last year.
I can confirm that other Partnerships, including Portobello & Craigmillar (P&C) have displayed an interest in this event to see if there are lessons to be learned and good practice to follow.
This year, P&C received £21,737 and made 13 awards. The fund has reduced over the last four years and the budget for the coming financial year is still unknown. Normally demands exceeds the budget available and the Partnership aims to spread its allocations across the whole area and a range of groups. More information is available on the Neighbourhood Partnership website. http://www.edinburghnp.org.uk/neighbour ... fund-info/. The Portobello and Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnership Board may decide to change its process, but this might be dependant on the amount of funding made available and the costs of running an alternative process.
I think that given the current renaissance in community interaction in Portobello, something Portobe££o decides would work really well, fair enough there's the cost of running it, which look like 8% of the kitty, but there could be ways of removing them, maybe?
