Well done for bringing this thread back to top of the pile Poppy - I meant to post on it a couple of weeks ago but forgot all about it.
This was a fantastic day for Porty High School. We had just won the annual Edinburgh Schools 7's tournament which was held at Murrayfield and for a State school to even get near the latter stages was truly amazing. Normally the State schools were just the cannon fodder for the earlier rounds. To put our victory into some kind of context - we beat Stewarts Melville in the final and in their team they had Finlay Calder a future British Lions captain, his excellent brother Jim Calder who is a Grand Slam winner and many other players who went on to have good rugby careers. It was a phenomenal achievement for Portobello.
The people in the photo starting with the stripy jersey on the left -
John Campbell - 3rd fastest junior in Scotland over 100m when he was only 16 years old. The two that were faster were aged 18. An absolute flyer on the wing.
PoP - The handsome one! I was in 5th year at the time so the photo is probably taken about 32 years ago!
Scott Hunter - Played in the second row for Scottish Schools, he now lives in America and we visited him a few years ago.
Stewart Graham - He was in 6th year and did a great job as captain that day. A truly great player and a pleasure to play with.
Malcolm Gentle - A rough tough front row forward, Malcolm was in 6th year at the time and still lives in Porty today.
Alex Preston - An absolute legend and an utterly brilliant rugby player. If he had not stopped playing prematurely he was in line for 20-30 Scotland caps.
Alan Mekie - He was just born to play 7 a side rugby
Justice delayed is justice denied.
