I'd just like to say, in case that this global bird flu outbreak is genuinely the start of the downfall of civilization as we known it - it's been lovely meeting and debating with you all.

To those of you reading this post in the future once humanity has been wiped out, dinosaur-style - please if you invent a time machine, come back to (say) 2002 and kill all the chickens. It was the chickens what done it.

Time Travellers - You will find millions of them crammed together in huge sheds so it should not be too difficult a job for you.

actually yes - you can have one of my homebrew pinot grigio

although I would canvass POL opinion as to whether my brews are drinkable - I have served Bob flat beer and fizzy wine in the past - the beer was supposed to be fizzy but wasn't, and the wine wasn't supposed to be fizzy but was.

you could always cook with it though - eh Bob???

Been a while...

I was actually in Portobello this summer on holiday with my family. My aunt has a caravan at Seton Sands that we use. The bus ride from there along the coast into Edinburgh is simply wonderful.

Stopped in Portie a few times to visit relatives and walk the prom and High Street.

The Public Health Division has a broad remit which encompasses measures to protect the public from communicable diseases as well as environmental health, sexual health, healthy working lives and alcohol. You will work as part of a team to assist the development and implementation of preparedness plans in Scotland for pandemic influenza.

You will provide advice and support on pandemic influenza to the Scottish Executive Health Department, NHS Boards and the wider community. You will maintain awareness of public health law and legislation and understand how it affects the demands that may be placed on health and other systems during a pandemic. You will also be responsible for building effective working relationships and ensuring mechanisms are in place to aid communication.

You will be educated to degree level in an appropriate discipline and have experience of developing, commissioning, managing and evaluating project activities in a health service environment. You will have knowledge of pandemic influenza and emergency planning and be able to deliver results within tight timescales. Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills are essential. Knowledge of government health policy is desirable.

The BBC have tried to contact KT Tunstall to get a quote about how she feels what with bird flu landing near her home town - but she was unable to comment - she was on the other side of the world.

I'm just glad that William is not in Fife any more - at least our future monarch is safe. God bless him.

It was inevitable that a case of avian flu would be found in our wildlife sooner or later.

Anyone remember SARS and the panic over that? Until this one mutates into a form communicable from person to person I'm not going to worry much. I might stop drinking chicken blood though

I've been reading some of the latest government figures - they predict that even if it *does* mutate and there's a flu pandemic, there will only be 50,000 excess deaths.

What this means is that the people you would expect to die will die (elderly, young, immuno-suppressed, sick) and add to that another 50,000. Very bad, but not the downfall of civilization I thought a flu pandemic meant.

What I don't understand is exactly where Tamiflu comes in. One good thing that we have over the last pandemic (the one during WWI) is that they know to treat with antibiotics as lots of people died from secondary infections which can now be prevented.

Does anyone remember "The Survivors" ?

He had better be careful though, as a member of the only family allowed to eat swan on these isles.

Having said that, he probably employs a taster, and will wait for him/her to keel over (or not) before stuffing it down the royal gob.

Trying to look on the bright side, as I always do, I imagine that the queues for that chip shop in Anstruther will be not nearly as bad as usual.

I might take a wander up there this weekend.

A great jewish delicacy is goose fat. When I was in Budapest I had goose crackling as a starter in a jewish restaurant.

Haven't ever seen On the Beach - would like to though. It has Gregory Peck in uniform so that would be a nice counter-balance to the scary, nuclear, end of the world theme.

When was the last time you saw Day of the Triffids? I remember being very scared by that film and saw it again quite recently and found it very funny.

There was a very politely spoken guy on News 24 last night explaining that you have to get very up close and personal with a swan to get avian flu from it.

4 people who plucked a swan all died - it's not the blood though - it's if the feathers are contaminated from its mouth or (his words) "from its bottom".

Now wash your hands.

You should try doing roast potatoes in goose fat. As a macrobiotic fruitarian, I cannot do this myself, but I am told it is very good.

Wonder if that was the same guy who was n Five live last night. He announced there was absoultely no chance of a human getting it in GB. We are too well educated about the risks.

Think he said there are 150 billion farmed birds in the UK and 50,000 poultry workers. Don't imagine the wages are very good.
