Re: Portobello Indoor Bowls & Leisure Centre closing?

Closure of the bowling club doesnt make sense to me. Overall, the population is ageing, people need more chances to stay active and socialise. Some sort of shared use of the space would be great. An improvement, in fact.

Re: Visit Portobello (and let your dog shit everywhere)

Dog owners: genuine questions from a non-dog owner... can you really see where your dog has pooed on the beach, prom or a park everytime you take it for a walk when its dark? Isnt it easy to miss it when you are texting, chatting, lost in your thoughts etc? Do they poo on every walk ie if you havent...

Re: Rosefield Park improvements

My experience is that if you approach young people having a drink nicely and ask them to be careful about their bottles they are pretty civil. I dont know what happens in the end, and it only takes one stupid act to leave glass everywhere, but I like to think that approaching them with some respect ...

BBC Stargazing LIVE event in Porty?

I work at the observatory and the BBC Stargazing Live team has been in touch about running events that coincide with the next series of the show in early January 2013. They are interested in, possibly, holding their main event in Scotland in Porty. It might feature during the live broadcast (no prom...

This is great. We need to get a better grip on energy, what it is, where it comes from. Porty is actually a window on all this from coal seams to tides. A city wind farm here will really help to bring this home. I read an article the other weekend about architecture revitalising English coastal reso...

The beach provides probably the best, safest and most accessible views of dark, star-filled skies in the whole of Edinburgh - looking north anyway.

Cycle shops often seem to sell bikes on the basis of the strength of the frame and I always thought to myself, "I've never seen a frame break?"!

Did a sudden impact cause this?

Fresh post, so to speak. Apologies to administrator that I couldnt find an existing topic on this.

Walked boys to nursery along Straiton Place this morning. Hello?? How bad does it have to get before we find a fix?? Stacking up in layers?

Do any longstanding local residents remember a higher tide than the one we just had? I've often thought that memories ought to be a useful benchmark of extreme weather and perhaps climate change - and I'd have thought high tides would be something that people could remember quite accurately.

It doesnt really matter whether you think dogs are equals with young children, or not. The problem is at a practical level. Sufficient numbers of dog owners do behave in ways (not picking up the poo, letting pets bound up to small children) that frequently make using beach with young children diffic...

The nub of John Fraser's letter is to say this is an educational offer just like books, websites etc. If publishers, website managers etc got schools to write to parents he would be making a relevant point. There were four police vehicles, including a dog van, on James St at about 5pm today. The police seemed be interviewing residents of various flats along the prom. Does anyone know what this was about?

Little things on the beach

I keep finding small things disk shaped things in the sand. I imagine many of you will know what I am on about but they are hard to desribe. They are circular, about 4millimetres in diameter and 1-2 millimetre thick. They are a hard material and most of them are opaque though I think some have a str...

I've made a couple of trips lately with my toddler to the playpark in the Meadows. I am wondering if we are due an upgrade. N...
