Re: Wwwwhheeeeeeerrrrreeeeeesss Bob?
I'm currently at Joppa Rocks, the new seafood restaurant in Portobello Catz. Talk Porty remains a fascinating archive and one that many 'incomers' are probably blissfully unaware of. I'm sure that many of the links are broken but the forum otherwise appears to be in perfect working order. So much be...

Re: Back to the Future?
Well it may be very old tech but it still beats Facebook and Twitter hands down for threaded discussion. I would love for it to be resurrected and it's great that Lee has continued to maintain it.

Back to the Future?
Is it time to resurrect the Talk Porty discussion forum? These discussion boards may seem dated but they provide a vastly superior platform for threaded discussion, compared with Facebook.

Re: PORTOBELLO MARKET RETURNS - Saturday 1st February
Or Abercorn Park. My preference would be for the High Street. Markets are supposed to be busy, bustling places and it would feel like more of a natural extension of the existing shopping centre, rather than an alternative to it. I think it would also encourage some of the existing traders to partici...

Thought you might like this. It's film of a street party we held in 2008. The bellydancer, Moira, is the current owner of no. 16.

No. 10 was built in 1872. It was the home of the potter A.W. Buchan from 1874-1879 and lived in by 3 generations of the Moir family from 1894 to 1985. I have letters from people who lived in the house and know a bit about some of the previous owners.

HI Gene, thanks for your reply and sorry you had to type it all out again. I'm very interested to hear your reminiscences. I moved to Edinburgh in 1976 and then to Portobello around 1992, so still regarded as an 'incomer'. I married a local girl, whose parents still live in Straiton Place. Here's wh...

Re: Rosefield Street / Hope St
Hi Gene, I have lived at no. 10 for the last 22 years and have done a bit of research into our house. Mr Clark at no. 3 died a few years back but his wife, Anne, is still there. The Robertsons are still at no. 8. Ken Milligan at no. 14, who I believe lived his entire life in the street, died and his...

Re: Rat-running and large vehicles (Bath St, Straiton Pl etc
Confirms what I've always believed and what we all witness when the traffic lights fail. Suddenly, people start using commonsense and courtesy. But it's not just about removing the lights. There is a lot of clever psychology at work here.

And if you are responding, remember to add that you support online voting for the election. That is going to make it a lot easier for people to participate and ensure that the successful candidates have a strong mandate.

Re: Portobello Community Council
The simple answer to this is that there will be an election later this year. We will all have the opportunity to elect the candidates that we feel will represent the community best. The local interest groups are another matter. The proposal is to reduce the number from 15 to 7 and I strongly recomme...

No, the applicant decided to start demolishing it in a rather haphazard and dangerous fashion. Turned out he didn't actually have a building warrant to do so. All work has now ceased until this is in place and lets hope we don't have any high winds in the meantime or the whole gable end is likely to...

Re: New Portobello High School - Private Bill Porty Park
The Comely Bank anomaly is purely down to PPAG canvassing in Waitrose. They realised, too late, that their best chance of gaining support was to canvass outwith the catchment area, the further away the better in fact, where people were unlikely to be aware of the facts and were therefore more suscep...

So if it's all the same group, let's not get too excited. We could get a fabulous takeaway Favorita or we could get the non-league version.

Great posts today! I particularly liked the rant from thecrawfords - clearly a woman at the end of her tether! And I agree entirely - the main beach should be dog-free and dogs on the Promenade should be kept on a lead at all times. No problem with dogs but hate irresponsible and inconsiderate dog-o...

Re: New Portobello High School - Private Bill Porty Park
For some people, it just becomes a hobby. Wasn't there someone else who used to post here who asked for suggestions for his 50th (or was it 100th?) FOI? I suggested an FOI into how much time and money had been wasted on his stupid FOI requests, which he didn't seem to like very much.

St Philip's fire 1998
I posted this on Facebook earlier this evening. It's amateur footage of the fire that destroyed the roof of St Philip's in 1998. Pretty poor from a technical point of view and in need of a good edit (and perhaps a voice over) but interesting none the less. Rather odd too. James Braidwood clearly isn...
